VR the Present VR the Future
VIRTUAL REALITY (VR) is an artificial/ simulated environment created software. The user wears a VR headset with VR glasses, a pair of gloves, a sensor suit to get a feeling of reality. It is completely immersive technology. Sitting is one place you can see, feel, and hear everything.
VR glasses (principle)
The effect of 3D in VR is achieved by splitting the mobile screen into two halves, an image for the left eye and an image for the right eye. If the images for both eyes are the same, you see a non-3D image like normal movies. If the image is shown to the left and right eye differs slightly based on the angle of view, you perceive 3D effects. These images appear to give an illusion of depth. The technical name for this is stereoscopy. In our mobiles, we use the accelerometer to detect three-dimensional movement, a gyroscope for angular movement, and magnetometer to identify the position relative to the Earth. VR setups are connected to a computer which sends signals to adjust the images seen by the wearer as they move around their environment.
Does VR cause nausea?
VR sickness is caused by conflicting signals sent to the brain from the person's eyes, inner ear, and body tissue sensory receptors. A pronounced feeling of illness typically occurs when the viewer is watching a digital representation of themselves appear to move quickly in a digital environment while the person's physical body remains stationary. Like other types of simulator sickness, the symptoms of VR motion sickness can include nausea, dizziness/lack of balance, drowsiness, warmth, sweating, headaches, disorientation, eye strain, and vomiting.
VR Headsets
Have you ever wanted to have superpowers? How about flying around on a dragons back? Virtual reality is the way to go. Since the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive first launched, VR headsets have become more widely accessible and offer a variety of apps, games and experiences. Google Cardboard is an option that is affordable for anyone who wants to experience VR.
Applications
Facebook Spaces is a social platform where we can interact with our friends in whichever part of the world we want to. This is integrated with Facebook messenger , so if you don’t have a VR headset and you want to talk to a friend who has one ,you just need messenger on your phone .Now say both of you have the headset then the experience is next level! Many parts of the world are captured using 360 degree videography and are incorporated into the headset. Now its upto you and your friend to decide as to which part of the world you want to visit. All you got to do is place the photo sphere as in the picture on the centre of the table and you reach the place you wanted to visit. You can draw 3D objects, fist-bump your friend ,handshake or hold hands, go live on Facebook, take selfies and post them on Facebook, and lots more…
Machine Learning in VR
Facebook suggests several avatars for you by allowing you to select a photo of yours. It’s finally your decision how you want to look so they allow custom modifications to the avatar. Our movements are tracked precisely with the help of high end sensors which gives a feeling of VR presence. We can talk to friends who are virtually present in front of us. This is done by processing the vocal sounds and inferring the mouth shapes from that and finally animating the mouth. Each expression of ours can be detected with the help of machine learning algorithms.
The Future = Neural Interfaces (exists) + VR
Neural Interfaces This is a device which is most commonly worn on the wrist and collects signals transmitted through our neural network. It converts electrical impulses to digital impulses. Our biological output which is collected in the form of signals can be converted into a binary output which could then be fed into a deep network/machine learning network. The network would then decode our intention, so that we are able to interact with digital objects just by thinking. In the picture , the man is playing TRex-Runner with his mind. Now when this technology is integrated with VR it will be mind blowing!!!
